Ocean Shipping Industry Update – February 2021

The situation of the Ocean freight is critical in most of the trade lanes.

The current difficulties originated with Covid-19 and the lockdown of the past year slowed down all the

activities connected with the shipping industry.

The main problems are:

  • Ports’ congestion with consequent reduction of their productivity.
  • Long waiting time of the vessels before being able to start with the unloading/loading operations at ports, with following problems in keeping regular schedules.
  • All the operations connected with the inland haulage of the containers are higly slowed down.
  • Carriers are no more able to keep a regular turning flow of the containers with a consequent unbalancing of their movement.
  • All the above is generating a heavy shortage of space and equipment availability.

Savino Del Bene ocean freight experts are working hard to find the best freight solution based on your needs as well as offering flexible and competitive services.

Savino Del Bene is moving towards digitization of the Bill of Lading

Maritime transport is still today founded on a complex regulation with paper documentation, stamps and signatures. The Bill of Lading is one of the most important documents in international trade, it is present from origin to destination, and it is essential for cargo ownership, customs clearance and payments. This basic document travels separated from goods and it is managed by several actors of the chain. It turns out to be a slow and complex process.

With the acceleration of the digitization process caused by Covid-19, Savino Del Bene has started working, in collaboration with one of the most important shipping line, to the BL digitization using the innovative platform of the Israeli start-up WAVE, which digitizes and certifies the ownership, in a precise and univocal manner, of the original Master B/L.

The first branches testing this new system are Savino Del Bene Florence and Sao Paulo and thanks to the positive feedback received so far, we are confident that this new program could be extended to the other offices of the Group, such as Peru and Netherlands. It is a project that will improve the operational efficiency and safety of the entire maritime logistics chain for all the operators involved in this process.

Fully equipped field hospital delivery

Despite the pandemic is still affecting many aspects of our lives, Savino Del Bene has been working hard to guarantee its customers stability and the best supply chains solutions. Miami and Bogotá branches worked closely to ensure the Colombian Government the supply of a fully equipped field hospital to be installed in the capital city. The project consisted in the shipment of 22 boxes of overall weight 12.360 CW kg. Collected in Oregon and transported by road to Miami, the goods were sent via air freight to final destination in Bogotá.

The high proficiency as well as the expertise of the staff involved were fundamentals to successfully complete the project on time. It follows what our customer said:

The project was challenging due to short delivery times coupled with delays due to Independence Day holidays. However, it was possible thanks to the commitment and effort of all the people involved which positively impacted on the government’s response to face the emergency by expanding hospital capacity.
